The Impact of Separation and Placement

In this module we will explore the impact of separation and placement when a child or youth is placed in out of home care. Utilizing evidence based research and best practices we will explore various concepts such as ambiguous grief and loss, the stages of grief and loss and how to identify them in children and youth, recommendations and best practices for visitation, and development of action plans. This training module is recommended for all resource/foster parents and child welfare professionals.

Learning Objectives:

•Review the impact of separation and placement when a child/youth is placed in out of home care

•Learn about the concept of ambiguous grief/loss

•Recognize the stages of grief and loss

•Explore what helps (best practices with visitation)

•Determine next steps (action plans, referrals, resources)
