Criminal Court 101 and 102: The Intersection with Dependency

A basic understanding of relevant terminology and foundational principals of criminal law is essential for those in child welfare practice in order to appropriately recognize and apply the information from interrelated criminal proceedings to child welfare proceedings along the road to permanency. Participants will leave this session with an elementary comprehension of the intersection of criminal and child welfare law and its applicability to our work.

There are many areas throughout the life of a dependency case that are influenced and impacted by the status of parallel criminal proceedings, as well as numerous cross-references in our child welfare related laws to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code. A basic understanding of relevant terminology and foundational principals of criminal law is essential for those in child welfare practice in order to appropriately recognize and apply the information from interrelated criminal proceedings to child welfare proceedings along the road to permanency.
